The Great Swamp Conservancy is hosting its "Winter Hibernation Festival" on Saturday, February 25, from 11am to 4 pm. Regardless of weather, a lot is in store for a winter day without snow!! It's time for Central New Yorkers to shake off the winter blahs, cool down their cabin fever and come out of hibernation to connect with nature and work off some extra pounds. Come and observe 700 Bobwhite quail in their outdoor pen. Join in the Bobwhite quail egg hunt along a trail. If you find an egg (which will be hard boiled) with the GSC logo on it, a prize will be awarded. Only 4 labeled eggs will be hidden along a designated trail (instructions given out in main office building). The first 48 children that arrive will receive snowflake glasses and a DEC Conservationist Hibernation guide. Outdoor activities include: tug of war, ice fishing and hibernation games, White Tail deer station, toast marshmallows over a bonfire, Boy Scout Troop 43 project, animal fur display and at 1:00 pm visit live Siberian Huskies. The 3 W's, Winter Woodland Walk will be a 1 hour guided walk by an ESF graduate to discover animal tracks, plant and animal life at 2:00pm.

Inside the nature center, warmth is provided by a wood burning stove, not to mention the hot chocolate. Children can try their hand at making paper snowflakes and a nature craft. Watch birds feeding at the GSC feeding stations. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. For participating, a donation of $3/adult and $2/child under 12, GSC members receive a discount.
