Masque and Triangle, one of Colgate's Student Theater Clubs, proudly presents RENT the musical at The Palace Theater for four shows: Friday, November 11 at 8pm, Saturday, November 12 at 2pm and 8pm and Sunday, November 13 at 2pm. RENT the musical, written by Jonathan Larson, tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create their art in New York's Lower East Side under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.  Mani Rose Dreyfuss, Nick Galanin, Nick Grunden, Chloe Nwangwu, Diandra Rivera, Trinel Torian, Mitch Tucci, and James Vigilante star in this rock musical, with a powerful ensemble including Lauren Bender, Alex Djaha, Melissa McKenzie, YeonJu Mok, Becca Murphy, McLain Roth, Jake Sapon, and Alyssa Sokol. Director Alexandra Magnaud '12, assistant director Laura Uhlig '14, and musical director Emily Fennell '14 are proud to bring you this brilliant and moving musical with a cast that "really brings the characters to life" (Laura Uhlig). The Gallery of CNY at 58 Albany St. announces its biggest show of the year "Introducing Brett Scheifflee". Scheifflee, 25 years old, is the youngest artist and newest addition to the group of artists represented by the gallery. Scheifflee will present 23 new oil paintings on exhibit and for sale at The Gallery of CNY in Cazenovia starting Friday, November 4, 2011 through Wednesday, November 30, 2011.

Scheifflee grew up in East Aurora, NY and graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2009 with a BFA in Illustration & Design. At RIT, he also studied under one of his professors and began his career as a fine artist. During the last few years, Brett has become an important part of The Gallery of CNY as he has continued to hone his skills as an oil painter and show dedication to his full-time career as a fine artist. Brett currently resides and has an art studio in Aurora NY.

Scheifflee expresses a quiet yet powerful voice in his art. He paints using techniques dating back to the Flemish painters. But the images he chooses from his daily life keep the paintings current and reflective of our modern time. "Quiet by my own nature, I intend to let my images speak for themselves and paint so that what is already beautiful may remain so," explains Brett Scheifflee. In the exhibit will be paintings including landscapes, interiors and a self-portrait. The recent production of the original Ode to Chocolate has been nominated for a theater award in the USI Upper New York Independent Awards show. This delightful, entertaining cabaret was written, produced and performed by Hamilton's premeire community theater, The Palace Players.

"What an honor!" says Patricia von Mechow, director and author of Ode to Chocolate. "We are really excited to have been nominated along side so many other amazing shows and appreciate all the people going on line to cast a vote for our show."

Artist's Awards Night: it'll be an evening to remember, filled with color, splash, live music, and stylish fashion. The essence of the Upper State Independent Awards show is to acknowledge independent artists from all genres and backgrounds, showing appreciation for work by independent musicians, poets, models, designers, comedians, photographers, choreographers, movie makers/DVD, on-line radio shows, and television shows just to name a few. The award show is a local/National networking environment held once a year. It is always sad when we get to this point in the fall season.  Today will be the last report that we do for the 2011 foliage season.  You will still find areas of beautiful leaves across Madison County, but the winds of the last week have restricted those leaves to well sheltered areas.  For instance the west facing hillside along Swamp Road in Morrisville has a lot of yellows and reds in it.  That's the type of foliage that will be the best find this weekend. 
The good news is the weather for Saturday and Sunday looks cool but nice, so there will be ample opportunity to get out and explore, whether it is a hike along the Link Trail or at the Great Swamp Conservancy or if it is a visit to Our Farm or Wolf Oak Acres for their fall harvest festivals.  Enjoy the last weekend of good colors and as always share your photos with us on Facebook.

Chef and restaurateur Tom Douglas will present a cooking demonstration Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m., at the Colgate Inn, 1 Payne St. Seating will be limited, so advance ticket purchase is recommended at colgatebookstore.com/cookingdemo. Tickets are $10 and include admission to the event, food samples and a credit towards a cookbook.

The demonstration menu will include mom’s crab dip, grilled spice-rubbed salmon with spicy corn crepe and sweet goat cheese turnovers with hazelnuts, mint, and honey.

Douglas, along with his wife and business partner Jackie Cross, owns 10 of Seattle’s most exciting restaurants: Dahlia Lounge, Etta’s, Palace Kitchen, Lola, Serious Pie (with two locations), Seatown Snack Bar, Cuoco, Ting Momo and Brave Horse Tavern.

With almost 30 years in the restaurant business, Douglas helped put Seattle on the culinary map by cooking global cuisine using regional and seasonal ingredients. He also runs a retail bakery, Dahlia Bakery, now with a second counter, the Dahlia Workshop; a catering business, Tom Douglas’ Catering and Events; and an event space, Palace Ballroom.

All of his restaurants are located in the downtown Seattle and South Lake Union neighborhood.

Douglas is the author of three cookbooks: Tom Douglas’ Seattle Kitchen (Morrow, 2001), Tom’s Big Dinners (Morrow, 2003) and I Love Crab Cakes (Morrow, 2006), with two more in the works. In addition, Tom’s specialty food line, which includes “Rub with Love” spice rubs plus barbecue and teriyaki sauces, is sold nationwide.

Stone Quarry Hill Art Park is proud to offer to the Central New York community an exhibition of exquisite original limited edition prints by some of the world’s most important and renowned late 20th and 21st century artists. Each print is represented in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY), as well as other major museums in the world.

The  New York Prints of Mind exhibition opened on Sunday, October 2nd and will continue through November 27th . Gallery hours are Tuesday – Sunday from Noon to 5:00pm. Non-members pay $5 to park their car.

New York Prints of Mind creates a visual dialogue of artists’ prints, including work by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Helen Frankenthaler, Susan Rothenberg and others, from Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE), a fine art print publisher established in 1957, which sparked a revival of printmaking in America. Today, ULAE continues to collaborate with artists to publish small edition prints and artists' books.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we present this work created by many of the important artists of our time. They illuminate themes and images spanning six decades, held in print through the initiative of Tatyana Grosman, founder of Universal Limited Art Editions, ” commented exhibition curator and Executive Director Joseph A. Scala.

The colors in the hills of Madison County and Central New York have been spectacular over the past few days.  The great weather over the Columbus Day weekend helped the colors really "pop".

The best and brightest leaves seem to be coming from soft maples.  They are sporting a bright crimson color like the one in the picture to the left here.  Other prominent colors include orange and yellows.  Some of the best scenery can be found where hardwoods mix with pine and spruce trees.  The contrast of the deep dark green of forest pines and the bright colors of the hardwoods makes for an inspiring sight. 
We had been concerned that the colors this year would not be as bright, but it seems like this is a little longer season than most and they strong colors have come on in the last week.
