Opened in 1988 in a small space adjacent to the Residents’ Library, the original store gave new meaning to “window shopping” as customers were only able to look through a window at the merchandise which mainly featured books on the Oneida Community. Today, the relocated store features nearly 500 square feet of space designed by Doyle & Associates of Philadelphia (funded by Museumwise) to highlight an expanded library of books as well as an interesting assortment of merchandise.
Local artists provide woven baskets; handcrafted jewelry; soaps, salves and lotions; and beaded bouquets. A variety of children’s toys are made in the USA; there are note and post cards galore relating to the Oneida Community and its Mansion House, and several prints of vintage Oneida Ltd. advertisements are matted and available for framing.
“With the closing of Yankee Ltd., we are pleased to be able to offer a place for people to shop for unique gift items,” says Patricia Hoffman, Oneida Community Mansion House Executive Director. “Our selection of merchandise is continually growing and we are committed to featuring the work of local artisans,” she added. Look for all shapes and sizes of candles soon, made by the recent winner of the Martha Stewart American Made Award, The Bee Man Candle Co., located in Canastota.
The museum store is open during regular business hours at the Mansion House.
