Jazz `N Caz, Cazenovia College’s 8th annual jazz fest begins on Thursday, Sept. 24 with The Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet, at the Brae Loch Inn.
The jazz fest continues at the Catherine Cummings Theatre on Lincklaen Street, Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26, with the Brubeck Brothers Quartet; Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks; vocalist Jane Monheit; and Syracuse’s Bear Cat Jass Band. The Friday and Saturday evening performances will include a tribute to Leo Rayhill, host of WCNY’s “Sounds of Jazz.” Also performing will be the Cazenovia High School Vocal and Jazz Ensembles, and Cazenovia College’s student vocal ensemble, The College Singers.
In addition to afternoon and evening performances, the Lincklaen House’s Seven Stone Steps will offer “Jazz After Hours” jam sessions, 11 p.m., on Friday and Saturday.
Jazz `N Caz is free and open to the public. A $10 donation at evening events in the Catherine Cummings Theatre is suggested.
The complete schedule is on the Internet at www.cazenovia.edu/jazz.
The Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet is made up of members of the Institute's Fellowship Program, five talented jazz musicians, all recent high school graduates selected to study jazz at University of the Pacific for two years. The Quintet performs about 25 concerts each year around the United States. The 2009 Brubeck Fellows are trumpeter Nick Frenay, of Syracuse, N.Y.; pianist Noah Kellman, of Fayetteville, N.Y.; saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown of Horseheads, N.Y.; bassist Zach Brown of Columbia, Md.; and drummer Corey Fonville of Virginia Beach, Va.
Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks are renowned for their commitment to preserving and authentically presenting 1920s jazz and popular music.
Vocalist Jane Monheit (PHOTO PROVIDED) is an international artist who has performed at most of the major concert halls, cabarets and jazz venues around the globe. She has released seven albums and two DVDs, and has appeared as a guest artist on many others.
The Bear Cat Jass Band plays classic traditional jazz and swing. They have been in existence 52 years under the direction of Dick Ames (leader and cornet). Other band members are: Jeff Stockham (cornet, trombone and vocals), Bill Palange (trombone and vocals), Carl Borek (clarinet, soprano, alto and bass sax), Tom McKay (clarinet, soprano, alto and bass sax), Drew Frech (tenor banjo, plectrum banjo and vocals), Jerry Exline (piano, tuba and vocals), and Joe Smithling (drums).
The Brubeck Brothers’ Quartet (PHOTO PROVIDED) has performed at jazz festivals all over the country, have joined college big bands and have conducted workshops and clinics at universities across the country. Chris and Dan Brubeck grew up listening to, studying with, and eventually playing alongside some of the great jazz legends of our time.
