With the Canadian dollar achieving par with the American dollar, more and more Canadians are making the trek to places like Madison County for a quick winter escape. It is now more affordable than ever for our neighbors to the north to come and enjoy great food, wonderful accommodations and fun shopping. That being said, there are a few things to remember when crossing the border. BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - U.S. and Canadian citizens whose documents don't measure up to new travel requirements taking effect next week are being given written instructions and a warning at U.S. ports of entry.
Beginning Jan. 31, a driver's license will not be enough to get past Customs and Border Protection agents - though officials say they will make exceptions in the beginning.
The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require travelers to produce a passport or NEXUS card, or both a driver's license and birth certificate. The rules are outlined on "tear sheets" being handed out at the border in advance.
U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter of New York and 33 border-area colleagues are urging Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to hold off on any changes until June 2009.
