The participating sites include:

The Oneida Community Mansion House
Canastota Canaltown Museum
Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum
Lorenzo State Historic Site
National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum
Stone Quarry Hill Art Park
Gerrit Smith National Historic Landmark
Cazenovia Public Library

Visitors will be able to pick up the passports at any of the participating museums, tourism information kiosks inside the Colgate Bookstore in Hamilton, the Madison County Visitor Center on Route 20 in Bouckville, Oneida Commons in Oneida, the county office building in Wampsville, outside of Cazenovia Artisans in Cazenovia and at local chamber of commerce offices in Oneida and Cazenovia. Wool production in New York State in 2010 was 245,000 pounds, according to the U.S. Agriculture statistics Service. Add to that fiber from alpacas, llamas, rabbits, goats, and exotic animals such as camels, buffalo, and yak, and you have a LOT of yarn!!
There seems to have been an explosion of knitters, spinners, weavers, felters and other practitioners of the fiber arts in recent years. Guilds are springing up in every part of the country. Getting fiber from local farm to local artist can sometimes be tricky, however.
Enter the CNY Fiber Artists and Producers, and the annual fiber fair they host in Bouckville, NY.
The fair had humble beginnings, held for two years in conjunction with the Madison County Fair, with a handful of fiber vendors. It became obvious early on that a larger site was needed, according to organizer Pamela Haendle.
“Our hope was to showcase fiber animals and the products that can be produced from them,” said Pam. “We saw a need for a local festival that would highlight the many fiber producers in our area, and connect their products with local fiber enthusiasts.”
Pam obviously had the right idea. The first year at the site in Bouckville, over 45 vendors sold a variety of fiber, fiber-related, and farm products to over 600 attendees, in spite of a rainy weekend. There were workshops offered, and well as food, and children’s activities. Animals, including sheep, alpacas, goats, llamas, and rabbits were on display.
This year’s festival will be held on June 9 and 10, at the Butternut Campground on Route 20 in Bouckville. Workshops will again be offered, as will children’s activities, and maybe a few new surprises.
“We hope to grow every year, but don’t want to lose our hometown feel,” says Pam. “If we can educate the general public about our animals, and provide an enjoyable afternoon for people interested in the fiber arts and local farm producers, we will achieve our goal.”
Visit the group’s website at www.cnyfiber.org for more information on the organization and this year’s festival.

Madison County Fair Announces New Entertainment

http://www.madisontourismblog.com/1/post/2012/05/madison-county-fair-announces-new-entertainment.html

http://www.madisontourismblog.com/1/post/2012/05/madison-county-fair-announces-new-entertainment.html#comments

Uncategorized

Madison County Fair is proud announce that two of the most entertaining & Have you ever wondered what Brussels sprouts look like before you eat them? Or maybe what those poles are that you see off of Route 46 in Munnsville, stretching 18 feet in the air? Open Farm Day is your opportunity to learn more about the local food grown right in your back yard in Madison County. Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Agricultural Economic Development (AED) Program are delighted to announce the participation of 39 farms and 4 farmers’ markets in this year’s 5th annual Open Farm Day.

Open Farm Day will be held on Saturday, July 28th between 10am and 4pm. 39 farms and 4 farmers’ markets will be open to the public. This is a wonderful chance for you, your family and your friends to travel around the County, tour the farms, sample some homegrown products, pet animals and learn first-hand the diversity of Madison County Agriculture. This year, the Buy Local prize for visiting 3 or more farms is a Madison County bumper sticker. Each of the 4 regions of Madison County on the map and Cornell Cooperative Extension will have their own custom bumper sticker—collect them all! You can earn bumper stickers by visiting 3 stamps in one region OR by having one stamp from 3 different regions. When your day has come to an end and you have received 3 stamps or more, fill out the survey on the back of the Stamp Card and hand it in to the tour guide at your final stop. The tour guide will exchange your card for one of the special Buy Local bumper stickers. All you need is an Open Farm Day passport and a cooler (for all the goodies to take back home).

This year, Price Chopper is printing 20,000 full-page brightly colored Open Farm Day Passports. These will be available at 10 Price Chopper locations in CNY, mailed directly to 14,000 homes in Madison County as well as distributed to key locations in Onondaga, Oneida and Madison Counties.

New this year to Open Farm Day is the 4-H Youth Fair & CCE Open House. Visit and celebrate the 4-H youth program and see what they’re up to in 2012. The fair will feature animal exhibitions, pony rides and a petting zoo, as well as lots of activities for the whole family including a scavenger hunt! CCE will be hosting a pulled pork BBQ, sponsored by the Morrisville Lyons Club.

Open Farm Day is sure to be a fun and exciting event for all as well as a great way to celebrate the bounty of locally produced products and Madison County farmers. The Peterboro Mercantile will have a new stock of tee shirts and Civil War items for sale along with other Peterboro heritage items.

The Barn’s permanent exhibits on the Smith Family, African-Americans in 19th C. Peterboro, the Underground Railroad, and abolition will be joined by ongoing displays, book-signings, and scheduled programs by authors on both days of the Peterboro weekend. At 11:00 am both days, Robert O. Richter, Greene NY, will speak on his research for his 365 page book on the 114th New York Infantry Regiment, which was composed of 1133 men from primarily Chenango and Madison counties and parts of Broome, Cortland, Delaware, Oneida, and Otsego counties. 299 men of the regiment lost their lives during the war. 834 returned to the area and some moved to 40 states and territories. Richter is bringing the remaining copies of this comprehensive text for genealogical and historical research.

At 12:30 both days Cathryn Lahm, a professional photographer, will explain the photos, video, stationery, and publication of her visual recordings at the 2009 Peterboro Civil War Weekend. As an artist and an admirer of photography history, Lahm is an avid fan of Matthew Brady, who is, perhaps, the best known photographer of the Civil War era. Lahm composed her Peterboro pictures purposely eliminating background “modern” details and then applied post-production techniques to the photos to have them appear as if 150 years old.

Directly after the 2:00 skirmish, at 3:00 pm Rochelle K. Hamel shares her first novel The Darkness of Day, a story of a doctor from Central New York who enlists in the 122nd Regiment, New York Volunteers. The story tells of his escape from Andersonville Prison and his journey home, where his family has been dealing with challenges and secrets in his absence. Hamel has studied the letters of her great grandfather Sgt. William F. Fuller from Lairdsville in Oneida County. Fuller enlisted in 1862 as a private in the Co. C, 117th Regiment, New York Volunteers Infantry.

Much of the 2:00 pm skirmish takes place on the Gerrit Smith Estate around Smith’s 1804 Land Office which has exhibits on Smith’s wealth and his philanthropy.

The Peterboro Civil War Weekend Committee invites the public to step back in time on June 9 and 10 to commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The 12th U.S. Infantry hosts the encampment. For two decades the Peterboro encampment has demonstrated aspects of military and civilian life. In recent years exhibits and programs on abolition and the Underground Railroad have been added. During the event Peterboro relives the period of the mid 1800s when the hamlet held national recognition because of Gerrit Smith’s Underground Railroad station, the visitations of famous abolitionists, and the connection with John Brown that sparked the Civil War. Peterboro sites are on the Heritage NY Underground Railroad Trail and on the National Park Service Network to Freedom Underground Railroad Trail. The annual event is an educational and fundraising event sponsored by the Smithfield Community Association, the Town of Smithfield, and private donors. Proceeds from the event support the preservation and promotion of the heritage of the Town of Smithfield. Saturday, June 9 hours are 10 am – 5 pm, and Sunday, June 10 from 10 am - 4 pm. Admission is $8 for adults, $3 for ages 6 – 12, and free for children under 6.
