You can cover your ears and pretend not to hear it, you can cover your eyes and pretend not to see it, but you can't escape the fact that fall is almost here in Madison County.  The cooler mornings and crisper evenings of late August are without a doubt wonderful, but that means autumn is right around the corner. Of course the best part of fall is the brilliant foliage we get to enjoy across the area.  To that notion we will be starting up our weekly fall foliage reports on Thursday September 8th.  Visit the blog each Thursday to see the forecast and some selected hot spots to visit to see the best colors in all of New York State.

FREE Ben and Jerry's this Saturday at Our Farm 10/14/2010

Last year it was a report of a gentle giant roaming the hills of Madison County, in past years, Stratocasters, ladybugs, eagles and horses have graced the fields of Jimmy and Janine Golub. This year Golub’s Our Farm has designed its corn maze to look like an ice cream cone to celebrate a once in a lifetime visit to their farm by Jerry Greenfield, the co-founder of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream!

Jerry is an old personal friend of the Golubs, and he is personally driving a car full of ice cream from his factory in Vermont. On Saturday the 16th, Jerry will scoop Ben & Jerry's ice cream until it's all gone. "I'm really excited to see for myself what Jimmy and Janine have created on their farm....I mean Our Farm. I want to experience everything, the corn maze, hayride, the horse, pumpkin picking, and maybe Jimmy will let me pull the trigger on Boris, the catapult. They say pumpkins do fly", says Jerry. If you choose to come that weekend you could meet Jerry and enjoy all that Our Farm has to offer.

Our Farm is an award winning family farm that has been growing and selling farm fresh produce at a roadside stand since 1985. In the fall of 1988, horse rides, a petting zoo, hayrides, and U-pick pumpkins began. In 2007, Our Farm was granted the Emily Marshall Champion of Tourism Award given to the business in Madison County that has had great impact on tourism in the County.

Our Farm is open to the public starting on the weekend of October 2nd from 1-5PM. They will be open every weekend and Columbus Day through the month of October (stand is open every day). There is a $5 admission charge that covers all activities (horse ride, hay ride, petting zoo, corn maze, catapult). The only additional charge would be for pumpkins or refreshments purchased. We are also available to school and other groups on weekdays by reservations. Call 655-8453 for week day group rates.

There is a barn that serves as an indoor picnic area with educational displays. These displays focus on wool, dairy, and horses. Our Farm can accommodate week day groups of up to 125 at a time. For the fifth year, Boris, the trebuchet, will be throwing pumpkins, to the delight of the public. This popular spectacle is exhilarating. Click here to see this actually happen when a local newscaster came to see Boris. It is without a doubt one of the best fall family locations in all of Central New York!

Fall Foliage Report for October 15-17 10/14/2010

It is officially here!  Peak color in Madison County and much of Central New York.  The best color will be found north of US Route 20.  Those leaves were a little slower in changing and therefore didn't get rained off the trees as much two weeks ago.  South of Route 20 you will still find some spectacular color, it will just be a bit muted by lack of volume still on the trees.
Driving around the county the Stockbridge Valley is looking very pretty this weekend with both sides of the valley lined with many oranges, reds and yellows.  The drive between Cazenovia and Chittenango along NYS Route 13 is also quite nice.  There are a lot of great events going on this weekend so get out and enjoy the fall colors.

Best Bets for Columbus Day Weekend 10/10/2008
0 Comments

Fall sure is in full swing and with many people enjoying a 3-day weekend the weather is all set to cooperate.  There is a wide variety of fun things going on this weekend and I'm sure leaf peeping is at the top of the list for many people.  The weather is especially perfect for getting lost in a corn maze at either Critz Farms or Golub's Our Farm.  Here are your top five best bets for this weekend:
1. Start out at Golub's Our Farm and pick out the perfect pumpkin to make a jack-o-lantern out of.  You might even find one with your name on it!  Then after spending the afternoon at Golub's take those pumpkins home and hold a carving party.  Our Farm is open all three days this weekend from 1-5.
2. Enjoy a sweet glass of Cider at the Harvest Moon Cider Mill at Critz Farms in Cazenovia.  They are open all weekend including Monday.  Enjoy the 10-acre Udderly Cornfusing Corn Maze while you are there.
3. Take a stroll along the Chenango Canal Tow Path in Bouckville.  The great folks at the Chenango Canal Museum have lit the towpath for the month of October and this weekend mild weather and cool evenings will make for the perfect fall stroll.
4. Get the heck scared out of you.  It is weekend #2 for High Esteem's Creepy Camp.  You can find this camp of horrors along Route 13 between Cazenovia and Chittenango.
5. Find a little culture and enjoy a concert.  Enjoy Conductor Marietta Cheng as she leads Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor. New York Times states, "richly mellow tone, vivid colorings and romantic flair..."  Kind of like fall in Madison County.  The concert is at the chapel on the grounds of Colgate University this Sunday.

Best Bets for September 19-21 09/19/2008

The weather is supposed to be fantastic this weekend and we are excited about a wide range of activities that you and your family can enjoy.  Autumn is my favorite time of year in Madison County and this morning's frost tells me that it is a great time to visit and stay in a B&B to enjoy this great season.  There is a lot going on this weekend so here are your top 5 best bets:
1. It is the 2nd weekend for Critz Farm's Fall Festival and this weekend's weather will be perfect for picking out pumpkins and drinking a nice tall glass of fresh Squeezed Apple Cider from the Harvest Moon Cider Mill.  Admission is $6 a person with a maximum of $30 per car, and your ticket is good for the entire season.
2. Fall's Bounty is on display this weekend and three great farmer's marketing.  Cazenovia, Hamilton and Canastota host the best places to buy fresh produce direct from the farmers and this weekend's dinners can be bought fresh right from the farmer.
3. The Caz Ski Club hosts its 2nd annual Mountain Jam this weekend at their facility near Chittenango Falls State Park.  You can enjoy beer, music and fun all day on Saturday.  For more information and tickets visit their website.
4. Wolf Oak Acres is the area's newest Agritourism attraction.  There is plenty to do their this weekend.  Located just outside the city of Oneida, they will be open all weekend long and feature a corn maze, corn cannons, pig races and more.
5. Continuing the Agritourism theme, this weekend is the Madison County Ag Expo in Morrisville. The  Expo allows people to make connections with a rapidly expanding base of local producers in Central New York. Vendors, exhibitors and demonstrators, volunteers, and expo-goers will gather to: share knowledge about sustainable living and rural life skills; eat delicious, Central New York -grown food; buy and sell beautiful Central New York crafts and agricultural products; children compete in various activities; and have a great time.

Of course that is not everything this weekend.  Check out the full calendar of events to find the perfect family ac
